The celebration of Fifteenth Years has its origin in pre-Columbian rites of passage in which young people were recognized as physically mature and ready to take their place among the adults of the community. Although present day society does not accept one as mature until later in age, nevertheless the practice of celebrating the fifteenth birthday has continued among some of the peoples of Mexico and Central America.
Here at St. Hilary parish it is our custom to celebrate these occasions. The Church encourages families to emphasize giving thanks to God for the blessings of young life and to ask God’s continued guidance and protection as the young person advances toward adulthood. As a model of Christian womanhood the Church offers the Virgin Mary, the ideal woman of faith, hope and love.
